The Otello Foundation

The Otello Foundation is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2007.

Our goal is to raise money for children's causes that tend to lie outside public awareness. This year, our mission is to help the children of the city of Black River in Mauritius. The Republic of Mauritius is an island situated in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa.

On this island, there is an increasinly large number of disadvantaged and disenfranchised people, particularly in rural areas. In recent years, the number of children that wander in the street has increased across the island.

The causes and nature of poverty in Mauritius are unlike those in other African countries. Here the rural poor are the ones who have been left behind by the industrialization process and who are becoming impoverished as the Mauritian economy undergoes transition from a society dependent on sugar and textile exports to a service based economy. People who lack the education and skills needed to participate in the growing services and tourism sector are sinking into deeper poverty.

Through the efforts of the parish of Saint Augustin in Black River, there lies much hope for the prosperity of those in need.

We are extremely grateful for the generous support that we have received in the past, and we will continue to work to increase participation in the years ahead.
